City Workers Urged to Walk or Ride a Bike to Work

SAN PEDRO CITY — Employees of the city government of San Pedro, Laguna are now enjoined to walk or ride bicycles to work in a step to mitigate the impact of surging oil prices caused by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

City Mayor Art Mercado, in a Facebook post this Saturday, exhorted City Hall employees, especially those living near their work places should take the alternate mode of transportation.

“For those residing within a reasonable distance from City Hall, the use of bicycles or walking is encouraged to promote both fuel savings and health,” Mercado said.

Mercado also encouraged city workers to take public transportation or carpool when traveling to and from their homes and offices.

“With the continuing increase in fuel prices, it is important that we in the city government become responsible and careful in the use of our resources,” Mercado wrote in his post.

He added austerity measures have also been imposed on the use of government vehicles to ensure that they are used only for essential public service duties.

Mercado also reminded all offices to avoid non-urgent travel and coordinate trips when several personnel share the same destination.

“These simple steps will greatly help reduce the city’s expenses and allow more funds to be directed to services that our people truly need,” he said.

“In times of challenge, discipline, cooperation, and concern for public funds are important. Let us work together to safeguard the city’s resources for the welfare of every San Pedrense,” he added.
