Members of the Senate minority bloc walked out of the plenary session after opposing what they called a “rush to amend the chamber’s rules”.
In a joint statement shared by Sen. Francis Pangilinan, the minority bloc questioned the timing and process of the proposed rule change, which would affect how senators attend sessions and participate through remote means.
“We walked out because what happened on the floor looked less like orderly deliberation,” the statement read.
The bloc said the proposal should be opened to public debate instead of being “rushed by the tyranny of the majority.”
They also questioned why the chamber proceeded when, according to them, there was no duly constituted Committee on Rules and no elected Majority Leader.
“If the proposal is truly defensible, then let it pass through the proper route,” the statement added.
The minority said they wanted more time to discuss the matter, stressing that senators must be allowed to perform their mandate.
