Probe on Death of Journalist in Negros Clash

By Lane Afable, News Editor

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) will investigate the death of community journalist RJ Nichole Ledesma, who was among those killed in a military operation in Toboso, Negros Occidental.

“We acknowledge the conflicting statements regarding the affiliation of the deceased.

“It is important to establish the truth through a thorough examination of evidence, in accordance with International Humanitarian Law and human rights standards,” said PTFoMS Executive Director Jose Torres Jr..

Torres added that they welcome the independent investigation by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) into the incident.

All details must be fully and impartially verified to ensure justice and accountability.

Ledesma was among the 19 people killed in the military operation, which also claimed the life of UP student leader Alyssa Alano. The Communist Party of the Philippines itself stated that Ledesma was a civilian.

Torres reminded journalists operating in conflict zones to follow safety protocols.

He also said that wearing a vest, badge, or other identifiers that clearly show they are journalists can help prevent them from being mistaken for combatants.

“While this does not guarantee safety, it is an important step to reduce risks and allow journalists to operate more effectively in dangerous areas,” he added.

Earlier, the Palace said it would not interfere in the CHR’s investigation into the bloody operation.

“The loss of lives highlights the continuing impact of armed conflict and the need to address its root causes for lasting peace,” PTFoMS said.
