Taiwan opens study and work program for 25,000 foreign workers

The island nation of Taiwan is opening opportunities for Filipino senior high graduates and young college students to enter Taiwan under a study and work program as it ready to accept 25,000 foreign workers from the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand this coming school-year 2024-2025.

The Philippines has been an active participant in the study and work program in Taiwan since 2019 when the first batch of 400 young Filipinos were accepted in two large universities in Tainan and Kaohsiung in major engineering courses in those two universities.

The first batch graduated 2023 and many have of them decided to stay and work in the factories where they had OJT and now are earning 60,000 to 80,000 monthly. After five years stay in Taiwan they will be eligible for permanent residency.

Since 2019 300-400 Filipinos annually have entered Taiwan to enroll in universities for engineering courses like mechanical, electrical and A1 with the highly developed curriculum of Taiwan schools.

This year the Ministries of Economic Affairs and Education have joined together to attract more foreign workers to enroll in many colleges and universities as the low birth rate in Taiwan has developed in major labor shortages forcing Taiwan to accept more migrant workers into the factories and assembly plants to place Taiwan as the largest chip makers and production of cellphones.

Under this program more than 1,000 companies have pledged to support allowances for the board and lodging of the students while universities who will accept them will give scholarships.

The study and work program is for two years with the students earning wages while working 20 hours a week and those who will continue to a four year course will be allowed 40 hours on-the-job training in the factories.

The selected students will be responsible to have a valid passport, medical exams visa and documentation expenses. .

At present there are over a million migrant workers in Taiwan sustaining the economic growth of Taiwan and about 180,000 OFWs working in electronic and assembly plants in various cities in Kaohsiung, Tainan and other major cities.
